Cynthia Gutierrez-Garner

Cynthia (Cyndi) Gutierrez-Garner, Teaching Specialist for the Dance Program, teaches DNCE 1010 Modern Dance Technique 3, DNCE 1020 Modern Dance Technique 4, DNCE 1201 Jazz Technique 1, and DNCE 1202 Jazz Technique 2.

Cyndi began her modern dance training at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. In 1995, she transferred to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and discovered her interest in choreography from an outstanding faculty including Erin Thompson, Dan Shapiro & Joanie Smith Zoe Sealy and Danny Buraczeski. A unique aspect of Gutierrez-Garner is that unlike most emerging choreographers, she is equally interested in pursuing research in both modern and jazz forms of choreography Her work has been seen at numerous theaters in Minneapolis, MN including The Southern Theater, The Fitzgerald Theater and The Walker Art Center, several Arizona venues including the Herberger Theater, the Orpheum Theater and the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, as well as the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.

Her work has been commissioned by the Minnesota Dance Theater, Macalester College, Glendale Community College, Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State University. From1998-2001 she worked as the Resident Choreographer for the Minnesota Dance Theater, under the direction of Lise Houlton. Gutierrez-Garner has also served on the faculties of the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Dance Theater, Scottsdale Community College, Glendale Community College and Arizona State University. Her choreography has been supported by the Jerome Foundation, the McKnight Foundation, the Target Foundation, the University of Minnesota, the Walker Art Center, the Maricopa Community Colleges and the Arizona Commission on the Arts. She is co-founder of Gutierrez-Garner Dance, a professional modern and jazz company.
